Sweet&Small cold-water prawns are back
The Cold Water Prawns market has been a confusing arena for the past 3 years and as the World’s largest supplier we want to try and get a clear message out to the end users.
In 2014 and 2015 we saw a huge reduction in the availability of prawns due to quota cuts, movement of the biomass and severe weather conditions. Basic macroeconomics then came into play, demand outstripped supply so prices rocketed.
In 2015 we also saw a lack of small prawns and a lot more large prawns being fished. This meant that many end users had to switch to large prawns due to availability. However in the second half of 2016 we saw small prawns returning and less large prawns available.

Now is a good time to place your order of small prawns and benefit from attractive pricing
Large prawn prices will probably remain firm this year but small prawn prices may become a lot more attractive. However events in Canada could affect pricing in the late part of 2017, so our advice to buyers would be to secure good contracts now for smaller count prawns at reasonable prices. There could be savings of up to 25% by utilizing small prawns compared with large prawns this year. This is important as it means we could see prawn products such as sandwiches and prawn salads becoming more affordable, once again.

The quota cuts in Greenland and Canada have always proven to work well and protect the species which is important for everyone, but this has frustrated buyers in the past as prices and availability naturally get affected. By buying smaller prawns now, which look plentiful, buyers can at least ensure both a good price and good availability.
